The second annual Pass on Grass Volleyball Tournament at Troutman’s ESC Park drew 27 teams on Saturday. The all-day event featured food trucks, vendors, and fun for the teams and the hundreds of spectators who cheered them on.
The first tourney was to celebrate the installation of two sand volleyball courts, where the finals are played.
After the great turnout, South Iredell High School School Resource Officer and volleyball coach Kerry Baker and Troutman Parks and Recreation Coordinator Emily Watson decided to hold the event again this year.
“Last year we had 21 teams, and we had six more this year,” said Watson. “We’ve got groups who are high school players as well as the IC Stars. They are kind of amping up for their season. It’s fun for them to play each other.”
Several teams were there supporting friends and loved ones battling illnesses, including the Setting for a Cause and Spiking for a Cause groups. Players ranged from age 12 to older adults on the seven grass courts.
The proceeds will help pay for ESC Park upgrades.
Other upcoming ESC Park events include the National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and the second summer Party in the Park on Friday, August 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring a fun night of live music by 7 Days Band, food trucks, beer/wine, bounce houses for kids, and a great time for the whole family.
