Registration for Babe Ruth League baseball begins Jan. 11

Planning for the 2019 Babe Ruth League Baseball season is underway.

Wayne Harwell, who is beginning his 27th year as the local league president, expects participation to increase this season with the likely addition of a league for middle-schoolers.

About 625 players from 11 schools hit the field at Jennings Park in 2018.

"We offer everything from tee ball through 12 years old," Harwell said. "This year we're looking at offering a 13- to 14-year-old program.

Iredell-Statesville Schools is dropping JV baseball from its offerings this year, and the Babe Ruth program will field teams for that age group if there is enough interest, Harwell said.

Local elementary schools will be holding registration during the next four to five weeks. The cost is $65 per player, which covers the cost of insurance, umpires, baseballs, lights and more. The cost of uniforms is not included.

“We’ll crank it up out here on Saturday, March 23,” said Harwell, who has umpired more than 3,200 games, including two Babe Ruth League World Series, during his involvement with the league.

Each team will play 12 regular season games and participate in a postseason tournament. Regular season games are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesdays are reserved for make-up games.
