FROM STAFF REPORTS
Visiting South Iredell High defeated host North Iredell 3-0 on Monday night, spoiling Senior Night for the Raiders while closing in on the North Piedmont Conference championship.
With the victory, South Iredell (12-1-5 overall; 8-0 NPC) needs just one win in its final two games to claim the NPC crown. The Vikings have not lost since dropping a 3-1 decision to Newton-Conover on August 15.
In a tight match in which the Raiders failed to capitalize on a couple of great scoring opportunities, Thomas Moreno scored in the match's 13th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Ellison Johnson added a penalty kick to make it 2-0 in the 63rd minute on a foul call that left spectators on both sidelines shaking their heads. The Raiders had a chance for PK of their own less than a minute later, but Vikings keeper Gabriel Mack stopped the shot and a second attempt off a rebound.
Dylan Dellinger put the game on ice for South Iredell when he took a pass from Moreno in the 71st minute and put the ball in the net.
With the loss, North Iredell fell to 12-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the NPC.
Coach Tyler Carter called the game a tough loss. "They fought hard ...," he said. "We had plenty of chances but couldn't finish."
