The Greyhounds picked up their second consecutive win Tuesday by knocking off St. Stephens 4-1 in a nonconference match in Hickory.

Tony Pineda opened the scoring in the game's 13th minute when he put the ball in the net on a breakaway off an assist from Luke Gettys.

Shortly afterward, Gettys left the game with an injury and did not return. But that did not prevent the Greyhounds from scoring again. Their second goal came midway through the first half when Jose Guerra took the ball down the right side and sent a cross into Pineda, who netted his second goal of the night to give Statesville a 2-0 halftime lead.

St. Stephens came out firing in the second half, and Garrett Logan scored within the first five minutes to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 2-1.

The Indians tested Statesville with numerous shots on goal, but Greyhounds' keeper Aston Johnson was up to the challenge as he recorded 11 saves on the night.

Statesville made it 3-1 when Pineda made a play down the line and crossed the ball to the middle, where two Statesville players waited for the ball and Sam Johnson put it past the St. Stephens keeper. Less than two minutes later, Pineda scored his third goal of the night on a header off a nice cross from Sam Johnson to close out the scoring.

"I was very pleased with our performance and the 4-1 win," Greyhounds head coach Eric Hanson said. "Despite a 10-minute span at the start of the second half, we dominated the game against a solid team. We wanted the shutout, but will take any form of a win at this point."

Statesville, which improved to 2-4 after a rocky start, travels to Lake Norman Charter on Thursday.
