Prep Soccer Roundup: Greyhounds, Vikings earn nonconference wins
FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Statesville High boys soccer team scored five times in the first half en route to a 6-3 win over visiting Lake Norman Charter (2-2) on Wednesday evening.
Senior Toni Pineda continued his early-season onslaught by scoring three times and assisting on two other goals as the Greyhounds (4-2-1) won their second consecutive match. Through seven games, Pineda has 10 goals and three assists.
Senior Julian Eldridge, playing in his first game of the season, scored a goal and assisted on another for Statesville.
"Extremely happy for Julian, after dealing with so much over the past year, he was able to enter the game an immediately make an impact, scoring the first time the ball touched his foot," Greyhounds coach Eric Hanson said. "Truly amazing and just a real feel good story, I could not be more pleased with how this outstanding young man has handled himself focusing on doing whatever he can to help his team."
Sophomore Garrett Potemry and Austin Labretone also scored for the Greyhounds.
"Garrett proved he can keep the ball moving in the midfield, along with the seven other sophomores who have played major minutes," Hanson added. "It's great to see my young talent contributing in big ways."
Sam Johnson and Anderson Castro assisted on goals for the Greyhounds, and keeper Josh Fuhrman recorded 11 saves while and conceding three goals, including a penalty kick.
Hanson said his squad had a solid week, rebounding from a pair of shutouts with a pair of wins.
"I was very pleased with my team and they way they performed this week in front of our home fans," he said. "The defense was strong on Monday, picking up the shut out and on Wednesday they stood up to the challenge against a very talented Lake Norman Charter team. Fuhrman had a solid week, only giving up a PK and two goals from fantastic strikes from Lake Norman Charter's Conner Hahn -- that kid is a top notch player."
