Prep Soccer: Raiders knock off Cougars, Greyhounds
FROM STAFF REPORTS
North Iredell's soccer team blanked Carson 3-0 on Tuesday and remained within striking distance of South Iredell for the North Piedmont Conference championship.
The Raiders (11-4-1 overall; 5-1 NPC) scored three times after intermission and avoided a letdown a day after recording a historic home win over rival Statesville.
Froylan Luna scored two goals and Patrick Frye added the third goal for North Iredell. Keeper Frankie Barnes made 10 saves as the Raiders held off the Cougars (4-11; 2-5).
"Playing tired and beat up after Statesville last night was tough, but we stuck to the game plan of simple soccer and got three goals in the second half to win 3-0," Raiders coach Tyler Carter said.
North Iredell hosts West Rowan on Wednesday.
North Iredell 2, Carson 1: Jeremy Burke and Max Moreno scored goals to lead the Raiders to victory and keeper Dane Coltrane recorded 11 saves.
North Iredell 2, Statesville 1 (OT): The Raiders overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit Monday night to earn a critical NPC win over the Greyhounds.
Jamie Woodard gave Statesville the lead in the game's 19th minute when he slashed through the North Iredell defense, received a pass from Ross Garrison and blasted a shot past Raiders keeper Frankie Barnes.
But any momentum the Greyhounds had evaporated in the game's 57th minute when Landon Wilhelm was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the match, forcing Statesville to play a man down for the rest of regulation and overtime.
Less than two minutes later North Iredell's Josue Rodas curled a shot into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Halfway into the first overtime period Statesville defender Dawson Sprinkle was whistled for a foul in the box, and North Iredell's Juan Nieto converted the penalty kick for the eventual game-winner.
Barnes recorded six saves for the Raiders, while keeper Josh Fuhrman turned away eight shots for the Greyhounds.
With the loss, North Iredell moved into second place in the NPC and Statesville (6-7-3 overall; 3-2 NPC) dropped to third place, all but ending the Greyhounds' quest for a fifth straight NPC title.
"Boys took the first win from Statesville in a long time," Coach Tyler Carter said. "We had a game plan coming in and stuck to it 'til the end. I can’t say how proud I am of our North Iredell boys staying focused and respectful of the game."
The rivals are scheduled to play again next Tuesday in Statesville.
North Iredell 3, Statesville 2: Jeremy Burke scored a pair of goals and Ronald Echeverria added a third score as the Raiders scored the game-winner in the game's final minute after Statesville rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score.
Dane Coltrane made 12 saves for North Iredell.
