Prep Soccer: Greyhounds knock off Falcons
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Junior Jamie Woodard scored a pair of goals as the Statesville soccer team defeated visiting West Rowan 3-1 on Monday evening.
The Greyhounds (6-6-3 overall; 3-1 NPC) have won three consecutive North Piedmont Conference games heading into critical matches against rivals South Iredell and North Iredell.
Statesville built an early 2-0 lead on Monday by taking advantage of a pair of Falcons' defensive miscues.
In the game's sixth minute, the West Rowan keeper handled the ball just outside the box, giving Statesville an indirect free kick. Before the Falcons defense could get set, Greyhounds junior Garrett Potemry lobbed the ball over the keeper to Woodard, who headed the ball in for a score.
Less than three minutes later junior Camilio Restrepo fought his way through a pair of defenders who were trying to shield him, collected the ball just outside the box and then dribbled around the keeper for an easy goal. Senior Anderson Castro assisted on the score.
The Greyhounds returned the favor in the match's 33rd minute when they defense failed to clear the ball, enabling senior Alen Muskic to dribble along the goal line and flip the ball around Statesville keeper Josh Fuhrman, who finished with six saves, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Woodard scored his team-best 11th goal of the season in the match's 74th minute when he accepted a pass from Potemry and smashed the ball inside the near post. It was Potemry's team-leading seventh assist of the season.
Statesville 7, East Rowan 0: Five different Greyhounds scored as Statesville rolled to a win against the Mustangs in a physical North Piedmont Conference road match.
Jamie Woodard led the scoring attack with three goals and Christian Bahre, David Garcia, Garrett Potemry and keeper Josh Fuhrman (PK) each added scores. Anderson Castro and Potemry each had a pair of assists, and Bahre and Dorian McCullough had one each.
Fuhrman recorded six saves and Andrew Bonilla notched a pair of stops as the Greyhounds earned their second straight NPC shutout.
The match was delayed in the second half after Bahre sustained a serious leg injury after colliding with the East Rowan keeper.
