Prep Soccer: Greyhounds edge Alexander Central; Raiders blank West Rowan

Statesville High's men's soccer team shut out visiting Alexander Central on Tuesday as the Greyhounds earned their third consecutive victory.
After the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, Statesville senior Landon Wilhelm got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard about two minutes into the second half. Junior William Cordova provided an insurance goal in the final minute.
Seniors Colby Collins and Jamie Woodard were credited with assists for Statesville, and goalkeeper Sam Buckner made four saves to earn the shutout.
The win was the Greyhounds' 100th under coach Eric Hanson, who is in his sixth season at the helm.
Statesville improved to 6-5-2 on the season and salvaged a split of the season series with the Cougars (7-7-2).
Statesville returns to action in the North Piedmont Conference on Wednesday when they play host to East Rowan (1-11-2).

Jamie Woodard got Statesville on the board in the match's first two minutes when he converted a penalty kick after a Cougars' defender was whistled for a handball in the box.
Woodard and Colby Collins were credited with assists for Statesville.
Keeper Sam Buckner recorded five saves for the Greyhounds (5-5-2 overall; 2-1 NPC).
Carson fell to 1-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the NPC.
► North Iredell 2, West Rowan 0: The Raiders rebounded from a tough loss to rival Statesville with a solid defensive performance against the Falcons.
Jeremy Burke scored for North Iredell (12-2-1 overall; 2-1 NPC) and Juan Nieto converted a penalty kick after David Hernandez was foulded in the box.
Coach Tyler Carter said the strong play of defenders Evan Younger and Jorge Romero were crucial to the victory.
Keeper Dane Coltrane also made six saves to preserve shutout.
With the loss, West Rowan fell to 3-10-1 overall and 1-2 in the NPC.
The Raiders return to action on Wednesday when South Iredell (10-2-2 overall; 2-0 NPC) travels to Olin.
The defending NPC champion Vikings, who entered the week 11th in the Maxpreps Class 3A state rankings, have outscored their opponents 20-0 in conference matches.
