Prep Soccer: Greyhounds blank Mustangs on Senior Night
Statesville players and coaches pose for a photo after Monday's 5-0 win on Senior Night.
FROM STAFF REPORTS
After a couple of underclassmen gave Statesville's soccer team a little breathing room Monday night, three seniors made the most of their final regular season game at Greyhound Hollow in a 5-0 win over East Rowan.
With the victory, the Greyhounds finished runner-up in the North Piedmont Conference, ending a streak of four consecutive NPC championships. South Iredell claimed the conference title.
After the conclusion of Senior Night festivities, coach Eric Hanson sent 10 seniors and a freshman onto the field to face the last-place Mustangs. With many regulars on the bench and others playing out of position, the Greyhounds failed to convert numerous scoring chances in the opening frame.
After subbing in, junior Garrett Potemry put Statesville on the board in the 26th minute with his third goal of the season.
Freshman Ben Fuhrman recorded his first career varsity goal in the 57th minute to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.
Seniors Josh Fuhrman (61st minute), Anderson Castro (66th minute) and Dawson Sprinkle (74th minute) all added second-half goals for the Greyhounds.
Senior keeper Andrew Bonilla made six saves in 65 minutes in goal and Josh Fuhrman made three stops in the final 15 minutes as Statesville won its fifth straight match and recorded its seventh shutout of the season.
Junior Camilo Restrepo was credited with a pair of assists, while Ross Garrison, Josh Fuhrman, and Sprinkle each had one.
Statesville (11-8-2 overall; 8-2 NPC) will host a first round game in the NCHSAA Class 3A playoffs on Saturday night. Playoff seedings will be announced Wednesday by the NCHSAA.
