Mooresville boys knock off South Iredell to claim championship

The Mooresville boys basketball team overcame a halftime deficit with a strong third-quarter to beat South Iredell, 79-73, in the finals of the Iredell County Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Lamont Thornton led the Blue Devils with 19 points, AJ Stewart added 15 and Glenwood Robinson chipped in 13.

Mooresville trailed 40-36 at intermission but erupted for 28 points in the third quarter.

Derek Dulin scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Vikings. Tyler Everhart had 17, Greg Liechty capped a strong tournament with 12 and Austin Edds added 10.

In other games:

► North Iredell 58, Statesville 57: Blake Barzee and Jackson Hawkins scored 14 points each to lead the Raiders to a win over rival Statesville. Antonio Allison added 11 for North Iredell.

After trailing 30-27 at the half, the Greyhounds outscored the Raiders 20-13 in the third quarter to take the lead. But North rallied to win in the fourth quarter.

Miykei Fields scored 18 points to lead Statesville. Jeremiah Mott added 14.

► West Iredell 73, Carolina International 72: The Warriors coughed up a 17-point halftime lead but rallied to beat the Comets.

Led by Gabriel Kitchens’ 18 points, four West Iredell players scored in double figures. Hayden Blohm added 16 points, and Matthew Hooks and Eli Kitchens finished with 15 and 12, respectively.

The Warriors built a 47-30 halftime lead, but Carolina International rallied to take the lead before West Iredell scored the game-winner in the final seconds.

Tamauri Smith scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Comets.
