Spencer Ganes Goodwin Jr.

Spencer Ganes Goodwin Jr., affectionately known as “Sam,” 93, went into his heavenly home on Sunday, August 18, 2019.

Born on November 29, 1925, in Iredell County, he was the son of the late Spencer G. Goodwin Sr. and Alma Padgett Goodwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eva Dean Jolly Goodwin; son, Samuel Clyde Goodwin; grandson, Benjamin Zachary Padgett; and sister, Pauline Mitchell.

Sam worked as a repairman for Southern Bell for 35 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who honorably served his country in World War II. He was a long-time member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Methodist Men’s Group and formerly taught Sunday School.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Angela (Jimmy) Goodwin Padgett; granddaughter, Sarah Harrington; and great-granddaughter, Lilly Harrington.

A funeral service will be held at Friendship UMC on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kristy Burnette officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery with full military honors presented by American Legion Harmony Post 113.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, 907 Friendship Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
