Phillip Arthur Morrison

Mr. Phillip Arthur Morrison of 418 Cornelius Road, Mooresville, N.C., passed away at his residence on Sunday, March 3, 2019, following an extended illness. He was born in Iredell County on June 14, 1934, and was the son of the late Harry and Nettie Mae Houston Morrison.

During the early years of his life, Phillip met and married Mary Summers in March 1956. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2015.

He was a graduate of Morningside High School Class of 1953 and retired from Duke Power, where he worked as an electrician. He was a lifelong member of the Statesville Branch NAACP and a volunteer firefighter at Shepherds Fire Department. At an early age, he joined Zion Wesley AME Zion Church and later united with Bethesda AME Zion Church, where he served on the Usher Board and as a Sunday School Teacher. His last membership was at Campbell Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as president of the Usher Board until is health failed.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Morrison Jr.; his siblings, Mae Helen Byers and Leonarda Morrison; his in-laws, Marjorie Booker, Curtis Summers, Isaac (Ann) Summers and Robert (Loveada) Summers.

He leaves to honor the memory of his life his daughters, Phyllis Denise Morrison-Caldwell of Cornelius, Shawntee E. Morrison of Mooresville and Linda J. King of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren, Phillip Caldwell (Crystal ) and Ashleigh Caldwell, both of Mooresville, and Lindsay King of Baltimore, Md.; two great-grandchildren, Kellen James Caldwell and Nia Michelle Caldwell, both of Mooresville; one sister-in-law, Martha Ann Brown of New York as well as other relatives, church family, neighbors and friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Friday, March 8, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Mary B. Bigham Memorial Chapel of Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, 603 South Center Street, Statesville, N.C. Rev. Charles Young will officiate and burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery.

Mr. Morrison will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home where members of the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday. They will assemble at the residence, 418 Cornelius Road, Mooresville, at other times.
