Ella Mae Scott Gray
Mrs. Ella Mae Scott Gray of 216 West Sharpe Street, Statesville, N.C., was born in Royston, Ga., on February 9, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Hubert Lee Scott and Gwendolyn McWhorter Scott. She departed this life on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Accordius Health in Statesville. She was preceded in death by a son, William Leon “Buddy “ Gray, and two sons-in law, Larry H. Morrison and Lloyd Smith.
She attended Unity School and Morningside School. Ella Mae was on the Usher Board until 1993, and also the Stewardess Board at Holsey Memorial where she was a lifelong member. She loved yard work, gardening, shopping, and being with her sisters. Ella Mae will truly be missed.
She leaves to cherish the memory of her life one son, John (Minnie) Gray; three daughters, Elizabeth Ann (William) Keaton, Jeannette Morrison and Mary Agnes Smith; one brother, Theo “Babe” Scott of New York; one sister, Alma Gene Williams; two goddaughters, Louise (Hubert) Bellamy, and Elizabeth (Peco) Williams; one daughter in law, Janice McClain Grayof Statesville; eight grandchildren, Janet Leah Morrison, Tracy Evette (Robert) Shirley, Vinson Gray, Kelly (Monica) Gray, Michelle Baker, Markeatha Murphy, Barbi and Courtney (Shelton) Forney; 11 great-grandchildren, Tyquan Murphy, Amoise Smith, Khamonia Smith, Jordan Murphy, Brooklyn Smith, Andrew Hall, Michall Hall, Briana Hall, Brandon Gray, Kacey Gray and Nichole Gray; one great-great grandchild, Chase Gray; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of Life services will be conducted on Friday, May 10, 2019, at Holsey Memorial CME Church, Statesville. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m., but will assemble at the residence of 216 West Sharpe Street, Statesville, at all other times. Burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery.
