Charles Sidney Vaughn
Charles Sidney Vaughn, 81, of Mount Airy, received the gift of life on November 3, 1936, and the gift of eternal life on August 26, 2018. Charles was born in High Point, N.C., to Joseph Edward and Dollie Estelle Patterson Vaughn.
He attended Duke University and graduated from High Point University with a degree in Christian Education. He retired from professional ministry after serving as Director of Christian Education and then Music and Program Ministries at Central United Methodist Church, in Mount Airy, NC (1959-1968 and 1991-2001); Director of Christian Education and Pastoral Assistant at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville, NC (1968-1980); and Director of Ministries and Music at First United Methodist Church in Hinesville, GA (1982-1991). He was an active member of Grace Moravian Church following his retirement and served in several volunteer leadership capacities there. Charles also educated many tourists (charter buses full of them) about “Mayberry” and other interesting Mount Airy facts on the many tours he conducted as the Tour Coordinator for the Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce (2001-2015).
Among the many who will always cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Frances Austin Vaughn; Siblings: Jerry Vaughn, Betty Jo Vaughn Mills and husband Rick, Barbara Vaughn, and Charles Moore; Sisters-in-law: Carolyn Austin Dillon and Susan Austin Carney; Children: Melanie Vaughn, Mark Vaughn and wife Sherrie, Michelle Vaughn Day, Michael Vaughn and wife Connie, Jon Sharp and wife Sharon, and Catherine Sharp Pursley and husband Jay; Grandchildren: Johanna Hage-Hassan, Elias, Jedidiah and Skyler Day, Valeria Hazelwood, and Destiny Vaughn, Christian and wife Brittany Young, Sarah and husband Charlie Bottoms, Gracie Young and fiancé Tyler Wittkofsky, Ray, Rachel and Ryan Sharp, Zoe and Caelyn Pursley; Great-Grandchildren: Harli Quinn Bottoms, Trenton and Brian Young, Cali Mae Simones, Emma Jade Adams, and Lucas and Liam Kineston; Nieces and nephews: Nikki Vaughn West and husband Jim, Paige Vaughn Hartsell, Robyn Vaughn Marksberry and husband Chris, Greg Mills, Chris Mills and wife Michelle, Mollie Moore Philbin, Justin Price, and William and Chandler Carney.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Vaughn Moore, and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Vaughn, and a host of grandparents, aunts and uncles.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 15, 2018, at Grace Moravian Church in Mt. Airy N.C., with Dr. Neil Routh presiding, assisted by Rev. John Woods. The family will accept friends after the service in the fellowship hall. It is the family’s request that the celebration be colorful.
A second service to celebrate the life of Charles Vaughn will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville N.C., on Saturday, September, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Mary John Dye presiding, assisted by Rev. Gary Moran. There will be a time of fellowship in Memorial Hall following the service. Friends and family are invited to bring finger foods to share and will be invited to share memories of "Moments with Charles" at that time. It is the family's request that you come as you are--even in camp attire if you so desire.
