Bertha Mae Smyre Ferguson

Mrs. Bertha Mae Smyre Ferguson of 108 Prosperity Place, Statesville, N.C., departed this life on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at her residence. She was born in Iredell County on June 16, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Albert Smyre and Jessie Mae Summers Houpe. In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Andrew Ferguson Sr.; a brother, Glen Smyre; a sister, Louise Kyles; and four grandchildren, Robert Lee Ferguson, Johnny Eugene Bellamy IV, Johnny Eugene Bellamy Jr., and Donald Clark Jr.

She attended Unity High School in Statesville, N.C., and worked as a sewing machine operator in the Textile Mills. Mrs. Bertha was a member of Mt. Calvary Holiness Church. She will truly be missed.

She leaves to cherish the memories of her life three sons, Carl Andrew (Christine) Ferguson Jr. of New Haven, Conn., Clyde Richard Ferguson Sr. of Statesville, and Scotland Bernard Ferguson of Winston- Salem; four daughters, Marilyn Marie (Herman) Caple, Cynthia Elaine (Jimmy) Brown, Bertha (Nate) Woods and Beverly Eugenia Mattox, all of Statesville; five brothers, Frank Smyre of Statesville, Roger Smyre of Waco, Texas, James Houpe of Charlotte, Joe Sherrill, Johnny Houpe of Colorado, and Flossie Rucker of Statesville; six sisters, Mary (Ned) Thompson, Eva (John) Daniels, Gracie Summers, Martha Anderson, and Louise Sherrill; one sister-in-law, Harriet Smyers; special friends, Iki McCray, and Paulette Tucker; 22 grandchildren, Cedric Dion Ferguson, Angela Ferguson, Curtis Mayfield, Marcus (Carolyn) Ferguson, Gloria (Tyron) Caple , Pam Gillian, LaKiesha (Ike) Mayfield, Monique Morrison (David) Stevenson, Clyde Richard Ferguson IV, Tomeka Ferguson, Marcus Antonio Ferguson, Ashley (Michael) Nicole Ward, Bryan Keith Wilson, Jeremy Bernard Ferguson, Carl Andrew Ferguson III, and Nicholas Stevenson; and a host of other relatives, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, Statesville. Elder Carl Ferguson will officiate. Members of the family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. They will assemble at the residence of Elaine Bowman, 108 Prosperity Place, Statesville, at all other times.
