What to Expect: New Iredell County recreation center opens Monday
BY KARISSA MILLER
The Iredell County Recreation Center, a new fitness and wellness center located in the former YMCA building at 122 Grannis Lane in Barium Springs, will hold a soft opening on Monday, Jan. 7.
Doors will open at 5:30 a.m.
Iredell County Parks and Recreation Director Michelle Hepler said that this is a soft opening because not all amenities are available yet. Available activities for the soft opening include group exercise, open gym, volleyball, pickle ball, cornhole and indoor walking.
New flooring and fitness equipment will be added throughout January.
“Once everything is delivered, installed and inspected, we will hold a grand opening in early February,” Hepler said.
The recreation center manager is James Huffman, who previously worked in a gym membership setting prior to be hired by Iredell County.
Huffman said the staff is excited about the new venture and the county’s partnership with Children’s Hope Alliance (CHA) and the Town of Troutman. The county purchased the facility from CHA in the fall, and the YMCA closed its doors in December.
“We’re so excited to be here in the community. This is an open process that we’re looking to grow and grow with the community — offering fun, new and exciting programs,” Huffman said.
The facility will cater to people of all levels of fitness.
There will be five group exercise instructors and new state-of-the art fitness equipment, including an array of ellipticals, treadmills and bikes, along with two Concept II rowers. Personal training will also be available.
The facility will offer day passes for $5, a monthly fee and annual memberships. Discounted memberships are available for military/first responders and corporate groups. Guests will soon have the option to pay fees online, but can also pay at the facility.
The Recreation Center will be open 7 days a week.
