FROM STAFF REPORTS
A Troutman man was arrested on Friday night in connection with a 31-year-old homicide in Massachusetts.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced the arrest of Michael Arthur Hand, 61, in a news release on Sunday.
Hand, who lives at 250 Klutz Street, was arrested on a fugitive warrant and will be charged with murder in the death of 15-year-old Tracy Gilpin of Kingston, Mass., Cruz said.
The teen was reported missing by her family on Oct. 1, 1986, by her family.
Her body was found in Myles Standish Park in Plymouth three weeks later, Cruz said. An autopsy revealed she was killed by a massive skull fracture, according to the district attorney.
For the past 32 years the case has been investigated by the Plymouth and Kingston police departments, as well as state police investigators assigned to the District Attorneys Office.
Last week state troopers traveled to North Carolina and, with the assistance of the Troutman Police Department, arrested Hand on Friday, Cruz said.
According to a Troutman Police Department news release, the arrest followed "extensive interviews" conducted by investigators from Massachusetts and the Troutman and Mooresville departments.
Following his arrest, Hand was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. A magistrate ordered him held without bond pending his first court appearance.
