SPD: Suspect in two armed robberies facing charges

A man suspected in a pair of armed robberies was jailed in a lieu of a $300,000 bond following hs arrest by Statesville police officers.
On Tuesday, January 1, officers were dispatched to a robbery in progress at the Gas ‘n Snack on Landson Drive about 2:45 p.m., according to an SPD news release. When they arrived on the scene, officers were informed by a bystander that the suspect was running west toward a field.
Officers observed the suspect fleeing and after a brief foot pursuit towards Sowers Lane. The suspect stopped and officers were able to detain him without incident, police said.
The employees of the Gas ‘n Snack and Long John Silvers reported that the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Elton Petit Frere of Wilkesboro, entered the businesses and demanded money from the cash registers, according to the news release.
The suspect reportedly indicated he had a weapon concealed and attempted to take cash from the Long John Silvers' register but was unable to access it, police said. The suspect was able to obtain over $700 from Gas ‘n Snack, along with one of the employee’s cell phones before he ran away, according to the news release.
Officers searched the scene and pursuit area thoroughly, but were unable to locate a weapon. However, a search of Frere’s backpack yielded the stolen money and the cell phone, police said.
Frere was transported to Statesville Police Department for felony processing and was interviewed by Violent Crime Unit Investigators.
He has also been linked to a December 28 robbery at the Red Roof Inn, where he reportedly robbed a clerk of $200 while displaying a small knife, police said.
Frere was charged with three counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery. He was transferred to the custody of the Iredell County Jail.
Investigators with the Violent Crime Unit report that additional charges are possible.
