The Statesville Police Department is investigating after a teenager escaped serious injury when a bullet grazed the back of his head Sunday night.

Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Brevard Street about 11:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report from Iredell County ECOM about a possible shooting, according to an SPD news release.

A 16-year-old male found inside the residence was coherent and walking around when officers arrived, according to the news release.

The SPD reported he had "what appeared to be a grazing wound to the back of the head."

The teen was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem as a precaution due to the location of the injury. He was treated and released, police said.

Responding officers set up a perimeter to secure the scene; however, no suspect or weapon was located, police said.

The SPD Violent Crime Unit responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation is ongoing.
