FROM STAFF REPORTS

Two men and a woman face charges after they were found hiding in a concrete culvert after they fled from an Iredell County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrests of Kenneth Lee Lowery, 40, Mary Katherine Marie Adkins, 24, and Antowane Dennis Koontz, 40, in a news release on Friday.

ICSO Sgt. Ernie Line attempted to stop a gold Honda Accord for a traffic violation in the vicinity of Oswalt Amity and Triplett Roads on Wednesday, September 4.

When Sgt. Line turned on his blue lights and siren, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, according to the news release. The car continued travelling toward Highway 801.

While Sgt. Line was following the vehicle, it pulled into oncoming traffic, nearly striking a concrete truck head on, Campbell said. At that point, Sgt. Line cancelled the pursuit, but stayed in the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle, the sheriff added.

Additional deputies arrived in the area to assist in the search for the suspect vehicle. A short time later the abandoned vehicle was located at the dead end of Juliette Road, Campbell said.

After securing the vehicle, Deputy Michael Hicks deployed his K-9 partner “Gery” in an attempt to locate the suspects.

Deputy Hicks and Gery tracked into a wooded area, along a creek bed for approximately one mile before they located the three suspects hiding in a concrete culvert, Campbell said.

While searching the three suspects, the deputies located a firearm in the culvert which had been discarded by the suspects, according to the news release.

The three suspects were arrested and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. Once at the detention center all three subjects were taken before Magistrate Thompson for processing.

Lowery was charged with Felony Flee to Elude, Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana, and Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia. Lowery was also served with additional outstanding warrants from Rowan County. Lowery was issued a $116,500 bond.

Adkins was charged with Felony Possession of Schedule I Controlled Substance (Heroin), Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Misdemeanor Resist Obstruct, and Delay. Adkins was also served with several outstanding Orders for Arrest from Rowan County. She was issued a $40,000 bond.

Koontz was charged with Misdemeanor Resist, Obstruct, and Delay. He was issued a $1,500 bond. He is a validated Blood gang member by the N.C. Department of Corrections and a registered sex offender, according to the ICSO.
