FROM STAFF REPORTS
Two men and a woman face charges after they were found hiding in a concrete culvert after they fled from an Iredell County Sheriff's Office deputy.
Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrests of Kenneth Lee Lowery, 40, Mary Katherine Marie Adkins, 24, and Antowane Dennis Koontz, 40, in a news release on Friday.
ICSO Sgt. Ernie Line attempted to stop a gold Honda Accord for a traffic violation in the vicinity of Oswalt Amity and Triplett Roads on Wednesday, September 4.
When Sgt. Line turned on his blue lights and siren, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, according to the news release. The car continued travelling toward Highway 801.
While Sgt. Line was following the vehicle, it pulled into oncoming traffic, nearly striking a concrete truck head on, Campbell said. At that point, Sgt. Line cancelled the pursuit, but stayed in the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle, the sheriff added.
Additional deputies arrived in the area to assist in the search for the suspect vehicle. A short time later the abandoned vehicle was located at the dead end of Juliette Road, Campbell said.
After securing the vehicle, Deputy Michael Hicks deployed his K-9 partner “Gery” in an attempt to locate the suspects.
Deputy Hicks and Gery tracked into a wooded area, along a creek bed for approximately one mile before they located the three suspects hiding in a concrete culvert, Campbell said.
While searching the three suspects, the deputies located a firearm in the culvert which had been discarded by the suspects, according to the news release.
The three suspects were arrested and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. Once at the detention center all three subjects were taken before Magistrate Thompson for processing.
