Proposed I-SS school calendar for 2019-2020 unveiled

At their regularly scheduled board meeting in April, Iredell-Statesville Board of Education members gave their unanimous "thumbs up" to district staff to proceed with exploration of an academic calendar that more fully meets the needs of students.
The draft calendar for the 2019-2020 academic calendar contains 215 teacher working days and 176 student days with the same number of required holidays, annual leave days and optional workdays as the district's current calendar.
The proposed calendar has the school year beginning on Aug. 7 and ending on May 29.
Having the opportunity to end the first semester before holiday break instead of struggling to get testing done and end a semester while dealing with inclement weather would be a benefit to students and staff. Allowing Iredell-Statesville Schools and Mitchell Community College calendars to more closely align due to the college-going culture of I-SS is another benefit to students. Additional time is provided at the winter holiday break and, in combination with workdays and holidays, more family time can occur at various times throughout the school year.
The input of the greater community is important. Please take the time to go to the district's website, www.iss.k12.nc.us, where the headline story contains links to the draft calendar as well as a survey.
