Seven students recently completed a School Resource Officer Certification Course at Mitchell Community College and obtained certification to serve as a law enforcement presence in schools. This is the first SRO Certification Course offered at Mitchell.

Those completing the course were Deputy Brian Burns (Iredell County Sheriff’s Office), Officer Douglas Pruitt (Landin Police Department), Officer Joshua Barlow (Mooresville Police Department), Deputy Robert Mountain (Iredell County Sheriff’s Office), Deputy Larry Hilton (Iredell County Sheriff’s Office), Officer Attire Killian (Statesville Police Department) and Deputy Ben Hardy (Iredell County Sheriff’s Office). These certified SROs will work in Iredell-Statesville Schools, Mooresville Graded School District and Rowan County Schools.

The School Resource Officer Certification Course is designed for sworn law enforcement officers, with preference for officers with several years of experience in the field. The course better prepares officers to deal with a student population and associated laws/regulations, blending law enforcement officer and school official duties.

The 40-hour course is approved by the N.C. Justice Academy. Topics covered include:
· NC Tarheel Challenge and what they have to provide
· Roles of the School Resource Officer
· Legal issues for the School Resource Officer
· Gang awareness
· Exceptional children
· Juvenile mental health
· Problem solving
· Campus safety and critical incident response
· Presentations to students
· The education system and how to address students
