Mitchell's new Instron Universal Testing Machine will be used by students in Engineering, Machining and Welding programs.

Special to

Mitchell Community College’s Engineering department recently acquired an Instron Universal Testing Machine through funds from a Perkins grant.

The Instron Universal Testing Machine is used to test various mechanical properties of materials and is housed in the Hydraulics and Materials Testing lab in WFD. Students across multiple departments (Engineering, Machining and Welding) can perform tensile, compressive and bending tests to determine rigidity, structural integrity and design intent of structures and materials.

The equipment will allow Mitchell students to gain hands-on experience collecting live data and interpreting results of real-world simulated tests seen in manufacturing, quality control and product research, design and development.

“Acquiring this highly technical testing equipment raises the bar and adds diversity to our programs which sets them apart compared to those at other institutions,” said Jamie Campagni, Mechanical Engineering Technology program coordinator. “Students and our industry partners will now have the ability to simulate, test and research numerous mechanical properties of materials within the classroom and the workforce which otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. I can’t thank the college enough and those involved in making this all possible!”
