First-grade teacher Megan Houchins has been nominated by the Iredell-Statesville School District for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Beginning Teacher of the Year Award.
The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor beginning teachers and to retain teachers who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in North Carolina public schools and public charter schools.
Bein nominated for the award is a great honor, Houchins said.
“ Being a teacher in I-SS means I am able to be flexible to fit the needs of my students," she said. "I take risks in my classroom to bridge any gaps my students face. Seeing my students grow as individuals and learners is why I teach.”
Houchins has been a first-grade teacher at Lakeshore Elementary for two years. She received her master’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia University in 2018.
Principal Chris Grace is happy to have the Beginning Teacher of the Year Award nominee on the team at Lakeshore Elementary.
“Ms. Houchins is an excellent teacher and has already become a leader in our school," Grace said. "She already exhibits exemplary veteran teacher behaviors and competencies.”
