Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell wants to use more than $300,000 in drug forfeiture proceeds to protect his deputies and the general public during dangerous situations.

On Tuesday, Campbell will ask the Iredell County Board of Commissioners for approval to purchase an armored vehicle that would be used in barricade scenarios, hostage situations, hostage rescue, natural disasters and many other events.

“This piece of equipment will help save lives and protect our officers. We’ve had numerous close calls,” said Sherriff Darren Campbell.

Campbell said the Sheriff’s Office is looking at purchasing a Lenco BearCat model G3. He would make it available for use by the Statesville and Mooresville police departments.

“This vehicle will provide armor protection, off-road maneuverability, safe officer movement into hostile environment and so on,” Campbell explained.

The amount requested from Federal Equity Sharing (FES) funds, known as seized drug funds, is $333,712 for the purchase of the vehicle. Along with the cost is $10,120 taxes and tag, $12,500 for radio equipment and $4,500 graphics and other needs.

Commissioners will consider the request at the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday at the Iredell County Government Center, 200 S. Center Street, Statesville.
