Local radio personality Billy Buck of WAME has won Davis Regional Medical Center’s “Name Our Robot” contest with his submission of the name JAMES.
Buck chose the name JAMES to honor Dr. James Davis, founder of Davis Regional Medical Center. “Although I’m a bit young to remember him, Dr. Davis was instrumental in bringing modern medical facilities to our community,” he said.
Dr. Davis is remembered throughout North Carolina as a dynamic leader and pioneer in the local medical community, credited with performing over 75,000 surgical procedures. He led the way for innovative healthcare solutions in Statesville. For example, the Davis hospital was one of the first hospitals in North Carolina and in the United States to staff an Emergency Department 24-hours a day, 7-days a week by a physician.
Davis Regional Medical Center is proud to continue to his legacy of innovation by providing advanced healthcare techniques, procedures, and technology in Statesville.
“We are committed to continuing Dr. Davis’s legacy of innovation,” said Josh Snow, Davis Regional CEO, “Our commitment is highlighted by our state-of-the-art surgical robot and specially trained surgeons that provide patients in our community an option for a less painful, less invasive surgery.”
Robotic surgery is noted for allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries, resulting in less recovery time, less scarring, and less pain. Robotic surgery has been available at Davis Regional Medical Center since 2013.
The new robot, JAMES, has advanced features such as 3D-HD visualizations. “I think it’s appropriate to name the robot JAMES. It’s justifiably advanced medical equipment in Statesville,” said Buck, explaining the capitalization of the name.
The naming contest was open to any businesses affiliated with the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce and the winning name was chosen by a panel of Davis Regional Medical Center employees. As the winner of the naming contest, Billy will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the robot and surgical suite and a $500 donation to the charity of his choice.
