Statesville police investigating shooting on E. Greenbriar Road
Victim was reportedly shot while playing cards in abandoned home

Statesville police detectives are investigating the shooting of a 26-year-old Statesville man who was shot while playing cards in an abandoned house on Sunday evening, according to an SPD news release.
Police responding to a reported shooting in the 1800 block of East Greenbriar Road at 7:35 p.m. Sunday found Samuel Nichols lying on the back porch of the home. He had been shot at least twice and was transported by EMS to Charlotte Medical Center, according to the news release.
Nichols and several other people had been playing cards at the rear of another address on East Greenbriar Road before moving to the house where Nichols was found, according to the news release. Officers were told that while the group was playing cards, a short, light-skinned black male entered the residence and shot a firearm at the group and Nichols was struck by several bullets, police said.
The black male then fled on foot, according to the news release. Statesville officers, along with an Iredell County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, attempted to track the suspect but were unsuccessful.
Nichols was struck at least twice and had injuries to his chest and leg, according to the news release.
The Statesville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division was called to the scene to take over the investigation.
