Statesville police arrested a suspect in an attempted homicide case in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Friday afternoon, according to an SPD news release.
St. Petersburg police investigators contacted the SPD on Friday seeking assistance apprehending a suspect.
The suspect was identified as Marcus Donte Frazier, 19, of St. Petersburg. He was wanted on warrants charging him with two counts of attempted murder.
According to media reports, Frazier shot two men on Aug. 24. Police have not released a motive in the case.
Information was provided that led SPD investigators to believe that Frazier was staying with a relative in an apartment at Myrtle Place Apartments in Statesville.
Further investigation by SPD Investigators confirmed that Frazier was, in fact, at the apartment in the 200 block of Jonathan Lane.
A search warrant was obtained for the apartment, and the SPD Special Response Team (SRT) was called in to serve the warrant and arrest Frazier due to the serious nature of the charges.
Just after 12:30 p.m. Friday, the SRT unit and assisting officers arrived at the apartment complex. A safety perimeter was set up and officers began an attempt to evacuate neighboring apartments. During that time, the suspect, Frazier opened the door to the apartment.
Frazier was given verbal commands to come out of the apartment, which he did. Frazier was then safely taken into custody without incident, according to the news release.
Frazier was then taken before a magistrate, where a fugitive warrant was served. He was held at the Iredell County Detention Center on a $5 million bond pending extradition to Florida.
Serious precautions such as an evacuation, perimeter, and the use of the SRT unit are put in place for high-risk arrests to ensure the safety of not only officers, but for citizens as well as the suspect, according to the news release.
