FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Statesville man accused of sexually abusing a girl faces two felony charges following his arrest, according to an Iredell County Sheriff's Office news release.

The ICSO received a report on Sept. 22 from the Iredell County Department of Social Services involving the sexual assault of a female child under the age of 16, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in the news release.

The suspect, identified as Carl William Lee Schoneman Jr., 39, Mt. Olive Road, Statesville, was a family member of the girl, Campbell said.

The investigation was assigned to Detective Sgt. Jason Lowrance of the ICSO Special Victims Unit. The victim was interviewed at the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center in Statesville.

During the interview, the victim disclosed that Schoneman had sexually assaulted her during the summer of 2016, Campbell said. After interviewing several witnesses and collecting evidence in the case, Lowrance obtained warrants charging Schoneman with one count of Statutory Sex Offense with a Child and one count of Indecent Liberties with Child.

Schoneman was arrested on October 24, and placed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $250,000 secure bond.
