SPD: Downtown jogger robbed at gunpoint
FROM STAFF REPORTS
A man jogging early Tuesday morning was reportedly the victim of an armed robbery, the Statesville Police Department said.
The victim told officers that he was jogging on West End Avenue around 6:45 a.m. and noticed a black male on a bicycle following him.
The victim reported that the man had followed him for several blocks and that he had stopped jogging a few times to let him ride around but he never did. The victim said that he jogged almost to West Front Street and he turned around to jog back east on West End Avenue and the male suspect passed him, the SPD said.
The victim told officers that when he turned around the suspect also turned and started riding behind him again. After a short distance, the victim told officers, the suspect pulled out what was described as an aluminum looking weapon.
The victim said he wasn’t sure if it was a real gun or not but he stopped running. The suspect then
pointed the gun at the victim and demanded money from him, the SPD said. The victim said he was made to turn his pockets inside out and the only thing he had in his pockets was his cell phone. The suspect grabbed the cell phone and rode off on the bicycle toward Paola Street, the SPD reported.
The suspect was described as a slender black male, approximately 25-30 years old, 5’7”, wearing jeans, a dark hoodie, and black tennis shoes. The bicycle was described as a small black and white “mini” bicycle.
The stolen cell phone was valued at $150.
