South Iredell man charged with statutory rape

A South Iredell man was arrested and charged with statutory rape following an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

James Robert Tewell, 44, was taken into custody on Saturday, Nov. 26, and ordered held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.

Sheriff’s deputies received a report from a child stating that she had been sexually assaulted by a family member, identified as Tewell, on numerous occasions between 2009 and 2016, according to the news release.

After conducting multiple interviews, Detective Justin Carroll charged Tewell, of Starwood Drive, Mooresville, with one count of Statutory Rape of a Person 15 years of Age or Younger.

Tewell is currently being held in the Iredell County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending, Campbell said.
