The City of Statesville Recreation and Parks Department will host its third annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 21, at the Statesville Soccer Complex. The park is located at 212 Simonton Road.

“The goal of our Arbor Day Celebration is to motivate community action and involvement, inspire people to plant trees, and encourage the support of local non-profits and small businesses,” said Kali Brooks, assistant facility manager of the Statesville Fitness & Activity Center and coordinator of the event.

The free event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature vendor booths, tree giveaways, inflatables, Light ‘Em Up Mobile Laster Tag, and live music from 3rd Creek Bluegrass and Knock on Wood, and more.

A Get Fit Iredell Dance Event will occur at 10:30 a.m.; hayrides are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Another activity held in conjunction to the Arbor Day celebration is the Fun-K, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Participants are welcome to run and race, or walk at a slower pace without feeling rushed in this non-competitive event.

“Physical activity is important at any age. Being active helps your body physically and mentally,” Mark Wilkinson, fitness director and coordinator of the Fun-K, said. “We encourage all ages and fitness levels to participate.”

Wilkinson suggested that if some individuals want to try a 5K race without the competitive atmosphere, then the Fun-K is a great way to do so. The paved race course winds though the soccer park and the greenway. The course is mostly flat with a few grades.

“It is also a good way for families to come out and exercise together,” Wilkinson added.

To participate in the Fun-K, interested individuals can register online for free. Registration can also be completed at the Statesville Fitness and Activity Center prior to the event.

More than 115 individuals have pre-registered.

Participants can also register during the event at the Oak Shelter located in the second parking lot of the Soccer Complex from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

Door prizes will be given away after the race.
