Photo Gallery: Statesville Family YMCA Dance Academy presents 'Under the Big Top'
BY MORGAN HOOKS
The Statesville Family YMCA’s Dance Academy performed before a capacity crowd at Statesville High School on Saturday evening.
Nearly 900 people filled Mac Gray Auditorium to take in the “Under the Big Top.” The show will go on for two evenings to meet demand, with the Sunday show selling out even before the Saturday show began.
Dancers put on a show fit for a circus, with acrobatics, ballet, hip hop, lyrical, tap, and plenty of red noses and tutus.
There were around 230 dancers Saturday evening, representing a tremendous growth from the 30 dancers that started the program. The dancers range from beginners to ballerinas, and included children with disabilities.
Director Laura Hanson thanked recital-goers for giving her "the opportunity to pursue her dream and teach dance.”
As the Academy’s performers took their bow, the auditorium gave them a standing ovation.
Registration scheduled for June 8
The YMCA Dance Academy is hosting an open house on June 8 for those wanting to dance in next year’s recital. Registration for dance classes is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for young dancers, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for everyone.
New next year will be the Academy’s inaugural competition class for dancers age 8 and up who want to showcase what they have learned and compete against other studios in the area.
