The Iredell Senior Center, located at 344 East Front Street in Statesville, announces the following programs for October:

Advanced Retirement Income Planning/HECM

When: Thursday, October 3, at 10 a.m.
Details: Cme learn more how to increase your cash flow, pay off your mortgage, pay for medical expenses, and increase your legacy to heirs by learning how to utilize a properly implemented Reverse Mortgage.

Coffee with Mayor Costi Kutteh

When: Tuesday, October 8, at 2 p.m.
Details: This group meets every second Tuesday of each month. Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to have a casual conversation with the mayor of Statesville in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Coffee will be available.

Blood-Pressure Check

When: Wednesday, October 9, at 12:30 p.m.
Details: Come by and check your blood pressure with an RN from Iredell Health System Community Wellness.

Flu Shots

When: Wednesday, October 18, at 12:30 p.m.
Details: An RN from Iredell Health System Community Wellness will give flu shots. Registration required; deadline is October 16. Insurance card required.

CBD Oils and Benefits

When: Wednesday, October 9, at 2 p.m.
Details: Pat Eames will provide information on CBD oils.

Essentials of Estate Planning

When: Thursday, October 10, at 10 a.m.
Details: This course is designed to take the confusion out of estate planning and empower you to design a plan that will protect you, your assets, and most importantly your loved ones. Upon completion, you will know how to properly protect your assets from probate and devise a plan for income that will last throughout your retirement and your spouse's retirement, and take advantage of little-known tax tips and strategies that will help you achieve your goals with the least amount of taxes owed to Uncle Sam.

Healthy Sleep

When: Monday, October 14, at 2 p.m.
Details: Yasushi Furukawa with Zcare will discuss the importance of getting the right amount of good, high-quality sleep for your physical and mental health. Learn about some common sleep challenges and steps you can take to get better sleep.

Ghosts & Goblins, Dance & Karaoke Halloween

When: Thursday, October 17, 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Details: Sponsored by The Gardens of Statesville & Cardinal Village. Join us for a meal, dance and Karaoke. Bring a covered dish to share and serving utensils for the 5:30 p.m. meal.

Depression: From Surviving to Thriving

When: Wednesday, October 23, at 1 p.m.
Details: A hidden epidemic, depression is underdiagnosed and untreated in older adults, leading to increased suicide rates. This evidence-informed course examines causes of depression, symptoms, treatment and caregiving tips that are relevant for older adults.

Emergency Preparedness

When: Wednesday, October 23, at 2:30 p.m.
Details: Kent Greene, director of Fire Services & Emergency Management, will talk about making sure that there are working fire alarms in the homes and having a fire extinguisher. We’ll also talk about ways to maintain safety in the home such as not overloading outlets, removing trip hazards, safety during power outages, etc. Then we’ll move into emergency preparedness and what to do if we’re impacted by severe weather or other incidents that could result in evacuation for extended periods of time.

AARP Safe Driving

When: October 24, from 12 to 4:30 p.m.
Details: This class is designed for drivers age 50 and older. Learn defensive driving and safety strategies. Completion of the program may provide an auto insurance discount. Check with your agent. Register by October 22. Fee: $15 for AARP members (ID required) or $20 for non-members.

Fourth Friday Movie

When: Friday, October 25, at 1:30 p.m.
Details: Call the Senior Center for the movie name. Complimentary popcorn and drinks.

Halloween Info Fair

When: Wednesday, October 30, at 1 p.m.
Details: No fee. Register by October 28. Bring your favorite Halloween snack. Drinks will be provided. Dress in your best Halloween costume. There will be a contest, door prizes, info and lots of fun. A variety of health care and community agencies will have booths.
