Iredell Senior Center is a program of the Iredell Council on Aging, a non-profit agency serving people 60 years of age and better, and is certified as a “Senior Center of Excellence” by the N.C. Computer and Hand Held Devices Classes

Tech Buddies ~ Wednesday, April 11 & 25, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM by appointment only. Call to put your name on the waiting list. Learn how to use your smart phone, IPad, tablet, and other hand held devices. No fee. In Room 205.

Intro to Computers ~ Wednesday, April 18, & Friday, April 20, at 10:30 AM. Cover the components of a computer and their use. Learn how to make folders and store files on your computer. Save data to external storage devices (UBS). Must register by Monday, April 16. $15. Instructor: Jackie Alan. In Room 208.

Special Classes, Services and Events

Essential Oils ~ Part 1 Tuesday, April 10 ($15), & Part 2 Tuesday, April 17. This is a two-part series class offered in partnership with Mitchell Community College Continuing Education. Learn about the history and benefits of using essential oils. Instructor: Kimberly Harrell. Must register and pay at the Iredell Senior Center by Thursday, April 5.

National Health Care Decisions Day ~ Tuesday, April 17, from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM. Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County will host an information table. In the Ballroom.

Easter Egg Dance and Karaoke ~ Thursday, April 19, at 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM. They will meet the third Thursday of each month. Bring a covered dish to share, and a serving utensil. Dancing and Karaoke are from 6:00-8:00 PM. Admission is $2.00. Partiallysponsored by The Gardens of Statesville and Cardinal Village. In the Ballroom.

Statesville Ballroom Dance Club ~ Friday, April 20, at 7:00 PM. They will meet the third Friday of each month. For more information, call the Senior Center. Join this group for ballroom dancing, snacks, and socializing! Please bring a finger food snack. Fee: $5 per person. In the Ballroom.

Caregivers Support Group ~ April 23. Meets the fourth Monday of each month at 2:30 - 4:30 PM. Are you or a loved one providing care to someone who has a chronic illness? Then a support group is exactly what you need. This Caregiver Support Group will be both educational and a time to share experiences with others who understand the journey you are on. Many caregivers feel alone, but this group will help you learn YOU ARE NOT ALONE! No fee. In Room 209.

Movie Matinee ~ Friday, April 27, at 1:30 – 3:30 PM. Come enjoy the movie The Greatest Showman. In the Ballroom. No fee.

Lunch and Learn with Nicholson Funeral Home. Monday, April 30, at 12:00 PM. Join us for a light lunch followed by an informational session on what you need or know about End of Life planning and how to lessen the burden on your lovedones at an already difficult stage of life. Register by April 26. In the Ballroom.

Crafts by Jeannie ~ Friday, April 6, at 10:00 AM. Come craft a different project each month. Class limit is 15. A donation is appreciated. In room 209.

1st Friday Bingo ~ Friday, April 6, at 1:30 PM. Bring your own refreshments. Sponsored by Cigna-HealthSpring. Caller: Brenda Simendinger. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Visually Impaired Support Group ~ April 12. This group meets the second Thursday at 10:00 AM. No fee. For more information call Tim Eller, Social Worker at 704-924-4111. In Room 206.

Give and Take Bingo ~ Friday, April 13, at 1:30 PM. The group provides their own prizes and refreshments. Each person should bring a new “dollar store” item or a clean, very gently used item as a prize. Bingo caller: Inga Henry; Assistant: Brenda Simendinger. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Needlecrafters ~ They will not meet until April 16. Mondays at 10:00 PM. Do you crochet, knit, sew or make other crafts? Need help reading a pattern? Enjoy working on projects? Bring a personal project or use Senior Center materials to make items for sale in our Craft Store. This group enjoys working together and socializing! More participants are needed. No fee. In Room 206.

Rubber Stamped Greeting Cards ~ Tuesday, April 17, at 10:00 AM. Learn many different techniques to create three - four unique greeting cards & envelopes. Fee: $5 for supplies. Instructor: Nancy McKay. Helper: Nancy Harris. Class is limited to 12. In Room 206.

Scrapbooking ~ Thursday, April 19, at 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. It is time to get those family & friends photos organized! You may bring ten photos with a common theme (e. g., anniversary, Christmas, graduation, siblings), along with scissors, double-sided tape, white glue and learn scrapbooking techniques, important tips, & how to create themed scrapbooks. Examples will be on display during class. You will take home one to two completed pages. Instructor: Kathy Strantz. Supply fee: $2. Please register. In Room 206.

Piedmont Parkinson’s Support Group (PPSG) ~ This group will now be meeting at the Statesville YMCA on the third Monday from 2-3 PM. The PPSG is for people with Parkinson’s Disease, their caregivers, & family. For more information call Pete Muhuluk at 704-450-4141 or Jane Noto at 704-495-4921. No fee.

Birthday Bingo ~ Friday, April 20, at 1:30 PM. Everyone is invited to play Bingo, win prizes, and have refreshments. Each person with a birthday during the month will be recognized. Senior Serenaders ~ Off-campus dates andtimes vary.This is a choral group sponsored by Iredell Senior Center. They sing songs and hymns for nursing facilities and senior groups at churches in the area. They have approximately 19 members and new voices are always welcome. If you would like to join, they meet occasionally on Wednesday at 2:30 PM to sing or practice. They are accompanied by a pianist and guitarist. For more information call: JoAnn Brown at 704-528-8305. Acrylic Art Workshop ~ Wednesdays at 9:00 AM. You may join the Art Workshop anytime. This group works primarily with acrylics, but invites anyone interested to bring a project and work together. Critiques and group projects are available. Instructor: Annette Ratledge. No fee or registration. In Room 206.

Corn Hole ~ Wednesdays at 10:00 AM. Come join the fun. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Intermediate Watercolor Painting ~ The new session begins April 11. Wednesdays at 1:00 PM. Instructors: Judy Carpenter and Sylvia Day. Judy has taken art lessons from numerous artists, attends workshops, and brings a wealth of information to the classroom. Sylvia is a Statesville watercolor artist. For the past 28 years she has taken Community College classes, many workshops with nationally-known artists, and taught local classes. For many years she traveled to art shows in surrounding states to sell her work, and now participates in the Statesville Art Crawl. Judy and Sylvia will alternate sessions. The classes are in six week sessions. Fee: $36.00 for six weeks. Please register. In Room 206.

Charitable Crafts/Mats for the Homeless ~Wednesdays at 1:00 PM through April 11. They will return to their regular schedule of Fridays at 1:00 PM on April 20. Join this group to make items for charitable groups and our Craft Store. No fee. More participants are needed to sew, knit & crochet. In room 209.

Fitness

Tai Chi ~ Mondays at 9:00 AM. Tai Chi improves strength, flexibility, blood pressure and balance when practiced regularly. It is endorsed by the American Arthritis Foundation because it can reduce joint pain. Instructor: Ray Ferrell. Fee: $6 per session. In the Ballroom.

Chair Exercise ~ Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM. This is a workout to music that improves/maintains muscle strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Instructors: Dot Williams & Jackie Click. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Yoga ~ Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 PM. Yoga is known to strengthen and tone the body while promoting flexibility and tissue oxygenation. Wear comfortable loose clothing and bring a mat. Facilitated by Faye Goforth. No Fee. In Room 209.

Beginning and Intermediate Line Dance ~ Thursdays from 1:00 – 1:30 PM for beginners who may stay and try other line dances that will become more advanced for the intermediate level from 1:30 – 3:00 PM. Line dance is a fun way to exercise the body and mind! Instructor: Kathy Strantz. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Walking & Talking ~ Fridays at 10:00 AM. Come rack up your walking miles, and enjoy the fellowship. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Billiards ~ Come join this friendly group. Tuesday mornings are dedicated to the women, and Thursday mornings are dedicated to the men…otherwise, the tables are open for anyone to play! The Center has three full-sized pool tables. No fee. In the Billiards room.

Senior Fit Walk at YMCA ~ Senior Center members may use the YMCA in-door walking track at Statesville Family YMCA or the gymnasium at Barium Springs Family YMCA. Come see us to enroll and “get walking” rain or shine! Fee: $15.00 per month. Pay at the Y.

Services (An appointment is required)

AARP Tax Aide ~ Mondays and Tuesdays: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM & Fridays 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM. Call 704-873-8568 for an appointment. The last day is April 13.

Blood Pressure Checks ~ The second Wednesday of each month from 12:30 – 1:30 PM. No fee. Drop in. Sponsored by Iredell Home Health. In Room 205.

Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) - Medicare and Insurance Counseling ~ At Iredell Senior Center, volunteer counselors trained by the NC Dept. of Insurance provide free individual assistance to people who are Medicare eligible. Counselors advise about Medicare, Medicare Part D, Low Income Subsidy Assistance, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage, long term care insurance supplements, and assist with billing problems, and Medicare fraud and abuse. For additional information or a SHIIP appointment, please phone the Senior Center at 704-873-8568. No fee. In the Library.

Senior Law Project/Legal Aid of NC ~ The next date will be announced. By appointment only. Legal services are provided two times a year by Attorney Alex Harris. Lawyers assist with telephone consults (advice) and may provide services for other legal concerns. Visit their website at: www.legalaidnc.org. Phone Legal Aid of NC for legal adviceor to see the attorney at 1-877-579-7562, Mon. through Fri. from 9 to 11 AM and 1 to 3 PM. An attorney will return your call after you have completed the intake process. No fee, but a donation would be appreciated. In Room 205.

Legal Services ~ April 30 at 1:00 PM. Free simple legal services provided by local attorney, Ms. Beth Setzer. Call for an appointment. In Room 205.

Long-Term Care Counseling ~ Counseling services for long-term care (assisted living and nursing home) placement, residents’ rights, and/or questions or problems in long-term care pre- and post-placement are available monthly. Service is provided by a Long-Term Care Ombudsman with the Centralina Area Agency on Aging. For additional information or an appointment, please phone the Senior Center at 704-873-8568. No fee. Games Galore!

Scrabble ~ Mondays at 1:00 PM. A word game that stimulates the brain. No fee. In room 206 through April 9. Afterward they will be in Room 209.

Contract Bridge ~ Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons at 1:00 PM. Please contact the Center about joining a group. No fee. Monday in the Ballroom, Wednesday in room 211 & Friday in Room 205 through April 11.

Canasta ~ Tuesdays at 1:00 PM. They are willing to teach for the first time, or help you refresh your skills. Join anytime. No fee. In the Ballroom.

Senior Canasta ~ The second Tuesday of each month at 9:00 AM. No fee. They are recruiting more players. In Room 205.

Duplicate Bridge ~ Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Contact the Center about joining this group. In the Ballroom.

Hand and Foot Card Game ~ Wednesdays at 1:00 PM. Hand and Foot is a variation of Canasta. Join anytime. No fee. In the Ballroom through April 11. Afterward they will be in Room 209.

Pinochle ~ Wednesdays at 1:00 PM…Join them anytime! No Fee. In the Ballroom through April 11. Afterward they will be in Room 209.

Mah Jongg ~ Fridays, at 1:00 PM. Play or learn to play Mah Jongg, a Chinese tile game similar to Rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. No fee or registration. Room 206.
