Get Fit Iredell, a community partnership of local agencies that designs and promotes active-living opportunities to improve the health of Iredell County residents, has several upcoming events this spring, including a dance-a-thon and the Family Frenzy.

The Get Fit Dance-a-thon is part of the Statesville Recreation Department’s Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 21, which will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Festivities also include a free untimed 5K race/walk, inflatables, and a variety of vendors.

The dance-a-thon will start about 10:45 a.m., just after the FunK. Betty’s School of Dance teachers and students will assist in setting up music stations so participants can try out different types of dance moves.

Iredell County Partnership for Young Children and Piedmont Health Care are helping out with the dance-a-thon.

The free Arbor Day Fun-K begins at 10 a.m. The race will begin and ends at the Statesville Soccer Complex at 2012 Simonton Road. Registration (https://runsignup.com/Race/Events/NC/Statesville/A...) ends April 20 at 4 p.m.

Everyone, including pets, are welcome for this fun walk, run, skip, or stroll on the Statesville Greenway. There will be no timers, no awards, no competition -- just a great way for the family to get active.

The first 200 participants to pre-register get a free T-shirt. The first 25 who pre-register also receive a pair of Thorlo socks! All registered participants will also be placed in a drawing for a Continental Tires gift certificate valued up to $1,500 for a set of passenger or lightweight truck tires.

FAMILY FRENZY

Planning is also underway for the GFI’s Family Frenzy event, a cooperative effort of Iredell County Parks and Recreation, Troutman Parks and Recreation, and the Statesville and Lowes YMCAs.

Families are invited to come out for a variety of activities, an obstacle course, music, and fun on Sunday, May 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Stumpy Creek Park on Perth Road, a few miles south of Troutman.

LONGEST TABLE

Sara Lewis of the United Way of Iredell County also urged GFI member organizations to get involved with the Longest Table event, set for Tuesday, May 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Statesville High School stadium track.

The event invites people from all walks of life to come together to share a meal and conversation and foster new friendships, according to Iredell County United Way Executive Director Brett Eckerman.

The Longest Table event’s goal is to build a better sense of community and use these new connections to strengthen camaraderie in Iredell County, said Ackerman.

Seating will be assigned when participants check in to the event. The goal is to have everyone sit with people they do not already know so that new relationships can be built and new conversations started.

After building everyone’s confidence and ability to reach out to one another, organizers hope that these new connections will bridge gaps in future community planning decisions.

Lewis hopes that the communal table will reach at least half way around the track this year.

Those interested can reserve their tickets at http://bit.ly/2018longesttable or call United Way at 704-872-3000. Lead sponsor for the event is Cheney Brothers Distribution.
