Organizers of the Polar Plunge at the Statesville Leisure Pool are hoping for a big turnout at the fourth annual event, which is scheduled for Saturday, February 2.

Proceeds from the plunge benefit the Iredell County Special Olympics.

Registration is $25 and includes an event T-shirt. There is no age restriction for the event, however, participants must be at least 48 inches tall or pass a swim test at the lifeguard’s discretion.

Check-in starts at 1 p.m. with plunging to commence at 2 p.m. The Leisure Pool is located at 1877 Simonton Road.

About 75 people have participated in past polar plunges, which features a rapid descent down the water slide and plunging into the chilly pool. Participants have worn everything from business attire to superhero costumes.

"Everyone has a good attitude and it's a lot of fun," said Kali Moore, program director for the City of Statesville Recreation and Parks Department.
