Annual Turkey Bingo fundraiser set for Nov. 14 at Civic Center

Thanksgiving is coming up, which means it’s time for the City of Statesville Recreation and Parks Department’s annual Turkey Bingo event to raise money for the Iredell County Special Olympics.
This year marks the 8th annual event, which is now held at the Statesville Civic Center because of the popularity.
This year’s event is Tuesday, November 14. Doors open at 6 p.m. Turkey Bingo starts at 7 p.m. and usually lasts around an hour and a half. Organizers advise arriving early if you want to get a table with your group.
“We’ve had a great turnout at this event in the last few years,” said Richard Griggs, program director for Statesville Recreation and Parks Department. “The first year we had maybe 25 people and now we have several hundred. This year, we will have seating for over 500 people.”
Bingo participants play rounds of bingo and the winner of each round wins a frozen turkey. Bingo cards can be purchased for $5. Players can purchase more than one card to increase their chances of winning. Once a player has won, the card must be turned in, or it can be bought back for $5. Cards are reusable for each round with the plastic slides.
The local Food Lions are donating items for the event. About 50 frozen turkeys and a few hams will be given away.
The Recreation Department oversees the Iredell County Special Olympics. About $20,000 is raised each year through various events each year like Turkey Bingo, the Polar Plunge and 5ks.
“We are the fundraising catalyst for that program and all money to fund the program is raised here locally,” Griggs said.
Some of the local athletes will attend the event so people can get meet them and get to know them.
“It’s a fun family event,” Griggs said.
