The Statesville Fire Department is hosting a CPR Awareness Class on Wednesday, May 8, and Saturday, May 11.

Both of these classes are free to the public, ages 12 and up. Registration is required to reserve your spot.

Fire Chief Spencer Lee said he hopes to offer these classes throughout the year in an effort to instruct the community on the proper techniques for performing hands-only CPR on persons of all ages.

Statesville Fire Educator Andrew Donawa is the instructor for the sessions.

The class does not result in CPR certification, but is a valuable experience for learning the latest CPR updates and the proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), explained Donawa. An AED is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

“It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm,” he added.

Sessions will be held at the Statesville Fitness & Activity Center, 1875 Simonton Road. The May 8 class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The May 11 class will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an hour break for lunch.
