Iredell Health System’s Pathology and Medical Laboratory Services Department was first awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) some 39 years ago.
Since then, the CAP accreditation’s checklists have been updated yearly to reflect current practices and technologies, but Iredell Memorial Hospital’s fulfillment of the accreditation has remained constant.
Dr. Georgia Olympio, Iredell’s laboratory medical director, was recently notified and congratulated of the laboratory’s newest national recognition for the excellence of its pathology and laboratory services.
“We are very proud of our laboratory staff and the fine work they do to serve our community,” Olympio said. “They all strive to provide the highest quality diagnostic service for our patients and healthcare providers.”
Nine inspectors examined the laboratory for a full day, inspecting the laboratory’s records and quality-control of procedures, laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program record, and overall management.
The CAP serves patients, pathologists and the public as the world’s largest organization of board-certified pathologists and leading provider of laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing programs. The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.
Divided into areas of hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, microbiology, chemistry, histology and pathology, the hospital’s laboratory performs or coordinates all blood and body fluid analyses and tissue pathology analyses on both inpatients and outpatients. Its staff includes phlebotomists, hematologists, histologists, pathologists, medical technologists, and supervisors.
“We have tremendous support from our administration to achieve this goal,” Olympio said. “We believe in our mission, vision, and values to inspire wellbeing together and guide our neighbors to optimal health. Our core values are exemplified in our staff as collaboration, compassion, integrity, and respect for all.”
