As keynote speaker Celeste Headlee mentioned earlier, everyone in this room is an expert in something – many small business owners challenge themselves to be the unattainable master of all aspects of the business. The recipient of the Small Business Award has been operating since 1995 in hopes of helping other small businesses tell their story.

The original owners began operation 23 years ago to offer a quick copy shop serving the Statesville area in a 1,700-square-foot space and employing five people. Today, the company occupies 3,200 square feet and within the next couple of months will move into a 12,000-square-foot facility in downtown Statesville and have a sales office in Mooresville. They could have chosen to expand their operation anywhere in Statesville but opted to stay in the downtown area as the location can attract new talent for the business. The company now has 15 full-time employees with expectations of further growth on the horizon.

When John and Kaye Martin opened the business, they recognized the value of community engagement.Membership in the Chamber, Rotary and Statesville Regional Development were seen, not as contributions, but investments in the community – and therefore for long-term sustainability of their business. The company was a primary partner in the City of Statesville’s successful All America City campaign in 2009, they’ve been deeply involved with Relay for Life, the Maker Space at the Iredell County Public Library, Iredell-Statesville Schools and numerous other non-profit organizations.

C.J. Sudman had worked for the Martins for many years and built an extraordinary reputation for finding creative ways to overcome problems and opportunities. The greatest challenge he would face was when John Martin passed away after a brief illness. C.J. worked with his trusted business advisers to purchase the company from Kaye a few years back. Through his leadership, and his trusting staff, Sir Speedy continues to grow from the foundation John and Kaye Martin built.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, the Chamber’s 2017 Small Business of the Year, Sir Speedy.
