Workers at the site of the Randy Marion Ford-Lincoln dealership under construction off Interstate 77 in Statesville unfurled a large American flag on Tuesday.
Randy Marion took the opportunity to thank city officials and the community for embracing his existing Chevrolet and Ford-Lincoln dealerships, which have experienced tremendous growth since he purchased them.
"This is the largest project we've ever done," Marion said, promising the new dealership would add jobs and increase property tax and sales tax revenues for city coffers.
The Chevrolet dealership in Statesville ranks first in the Southeast in commercial truck sales, and both dealerships rank consistently in the top 10 in their zone for all vehicle sales.
G.L. Wilson Building Co. broke ground on the $18 million project in November. The combined Ford-Lincoln dealership is scheduled to open in March of 2020.
Mayor Costi Kutteh and Councilman C.O. Johnson were on hand for the short ceremony.
Statesville officials have been heavily criticized for taking the owner of Gander RV to court for flying an American flag that is larger than a city ordinance allows. The city has asked the CEO to submit a variance to fly the larger flag, but he has not done so, and a recent motion before the council to allow the larger flag failed to pass.
The mayor seemed pleased that there would be no such controversy surrounding the American flag displayed at the Randy Marion construction site.
"It's well within the current ordinance," Kutteh quipped.
