The North Iredell Lady Raiders captured the NCHSAA Class 3A Volleyball Championship on Saturday, defeating the Chapel Hill Tigers in the title game held at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum.
“This team, this season, and this moment will be unforgettable,” head coach Natalie Tribble wrote on her social media page. “Raider Nation, you guys are unbelievable.”
The Lady Raiders entered the tournament as the top seed in the West Region after compiling a 22-2 record during the regular season, which included a perfect 10-0 record in the North Piedmont Conference.
In the playoffs, the Lady Raiders blitzed Western Guilford, West Rowan, West Henderson, Cox Mill and Marvin Ridge to win the West Region, dropping only a single set in the process.
In the state title game, Chapel Hill, which beat the East Region's top two seeds to reach the championship, was victorious in the first set, winning 25-11.
But the Lady Raiders (28-2) overcame the early setback to take the lead by winning the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-19.
Facing defeat, Chapel Hill rallied to win the fourth set, by a score of 29-27, to force a fifth set.
In the final set, Lady Raiders prevailed 15-12 to claim the championship.
It’s been nine years since the Lady Raiders last won a state title in 2008. The team finished runner-up in 2010 and 2011.
