Prep Soccer: Warriors, Greyhounds battle to overtime draw
FROM STAFF REPORTS
In a physical match that ended with each side finishing a man down, Statesville and West Iredell battled to a 2-2 draw Tuesday night in a nonconference boys soccer match.
Junior Quintanilla scored a pair of goals to lead the Warriors (0-0-2), while Tony Pineda and Dawson Sprinkle each tallied a goal for the Greyhounds (1-0-1).
Quintanilla gave West Iredell the lead in the game's 14th minute on a goal assisted by Julian Her.
Four minutes after intermission, Pineda headed in a Sam Johnson throw-in to even the match at 1-1. It was Pineda's third goal in two games.
But Quintanilla struck back six minutes later when he finished off a corner from Luis Flores with a header to give West Iredell a 2-1 advantage.
Statesville defender Dawson Sprinkle banged home a loose ball in the game's 72nd minute for the equalizer.
Both teams had chances in waning minutes and in both overtime periods, but neither side could finish.
The Greyhounds had 13 shots and the Warriors 11. Statesville also held a 7-3 avantage on corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Garrett Stiltner recorded nine saves for the Warriors, while Josh Fuhrman made six saves for the Greyhounds.
West Iredell travels to Hickory on Thursday, August 17, to battle St. Stephens. Statesville travels to Asheville on Monday, August 21, to play T.C. Roberson.
