FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Statesville High School soccer team exploded for six second-half goals on Monday against visiting St. Stephens night to turn a close contest into a 7-0 win.

Senior Toni Pineda gave the Greyhounds (3-2-1) a 1-0 lead when he converted a penalty kick with about 10 seconds to play in the first half.

Coming on the heels of a pair of shutout losses over the weekend, the PK was Statesville's first goal in more than 258 minutes, dating back to the Greyhounds' first-half goal in a 1-0 win over T.C. Roberson on August 21.

After the half, the Greyhounds' offensive proved to be too much for the Indians (3-2) as Pineda added three more goals, senior Austin Labretone had two and senior Zach Nicholson one.

Junior Milton Mungia had two assists for Statesville, while junior Dawson Sprinkle, sophomore Garrett Potemry and Pineda each assisted on a goal.

Greyhounds keeper Josh Fuhrman recorded five saves as the Greyhounds defense notched its second shutout of the season.
