Prep Soccer: Greyhounds drop pair, return to action Monday night
FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Statesville High School boys soccer team returns to action Monday night after dropping a pair of games in the High School Kick-Off Classic over the weekend.
The Greyhounds lost 2-0 at Cardinal Gibbons on Friday evening. The Class 4A Crusaders (3-0-1) dominated possession throughout the game, but were limited to a score off a free kick just outside the 18 late in the first half and an own goal by the Greyhounds in the game's 45th minute.
Juniors Ross Garrison and Dawson Sprinkle were stout on the back line and junior keeper Josh Fuhrman recorded 18 saves in the loss.
"I thought our back line looked great at times and Fuhrman in goal made some fantastic saves throughout the weekend," Greyhounds head coach Eric Hanson said.
On Saturday morning the Greyhounds (2-2-1) turned in a lackluster performance in a 4-0 defeat against Chapel Hill High (4-1) at the WakeMed Soccer Complex.
Hanson said his team would use the games as a stepping stone as they return to action Monday night at home against St. Stephens (3-1). Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
"I feel the experience we gained this weekend will be vital to us throughout the season," the coach said. "We played two of the best programs in the state and both gave us a challenge. Unfortunately we did not pick up a win, but we looked great on Friday night and can take many positives away from that game. Saturday the team seemed worn out and Chapel Hill took advantage, producing way more scoring opportunities than we had."
