Prep Soccer: Greyhounds celebrate successful season

The Statesville High School varsity soccer team celebrated a successful 2017 campaign with the team's annual awards banquet on Monday night. The Greyhounds went went undefeated in the North Piedmont Conference (10-0), finished 21-4-2 overall and advanced to the fourth round of the NCHSAA Class 3A playoffs.

The Greyhounds, who have won four consecutive NPC championships, recorded 12 shutouts this season and outscored their opponents 122-30.

Coach Eric Hanson, who earned NPC coach of the year and Region 10 coach of the year awards, presented individual awards to several players and honored players selected for all-conference, all-region and all-state recognition.

Senior Tony Pineda was named offensive player of the year, junior Ross Garrison was honored as defensive player of the year and senior Sam Johnson received the MVP award. Seniors Jesus Martinez and Julian Eldridge received the Greyhound award.

Pineda scored 68 goals and set the single season and career-scoring records for the Statesville High. Johnson led the nation with 43 assists.
