Letter to the editor: Former challenger endorses Johnson for mayor
To the editor:
I want to thank everyone who voted in the Oct. 10 election here in Statesville. Hundreds of people reached out to me throughout my candidacy for mayor and I am humbled by the support I received. While I wished for a different outcome, we must now make a choice about our future on Nov. 7 (or during early voting).
I’ve had pleasure of speaking to both of the candidates separately, for two hours each, where we were able to discuss the issues in depth. I asked each of them the same questions that had been asked of me by hundreds of concerned Statesville residents. Since both men have been on city council for more than 14 years, I asked about increasing poverty rates, decreasing household incomes, increasing crime rate, living conditions across the city, and more.
After hearing both of the plans to address these issues, I am endorsing Michael Johnson.
I am a firm believer in term limits, and I find it extraordinarily hard to justify re-electing anyone to serve in any one position for 16 years, especially as the statistics have gotten worse over that time period.
Statesville needs to focus on sustainable economic growth, and our city council needs to continue to work to attract in companies that can offer high wages to the residents of Statesville. Between the two candidates, Michael Johnson has already been working to make that vision a reality, and he is the best man for the job.
