FROM STAFF REPORTS
A 20-year-old woman was charged with child abuse following an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office into injuries sustained by a 10-week-old child.
ICSO deputies received a report on August 2 after the child was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center for treatment of a broken arm, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release. Medical staff at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center notified the Iredell County Department of Social Services as well as the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The report was assigned to Detective Sergeant Amy Dyson of the Special Victim’s Unit.
Due to the extent of the child’s injuries, the child was transferred to Levine’s Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Campbell said.
Upon further evaluation, the child was found to have a fractured arm, a healing fracture on the other arm, and three healing rib fractures, according to the news release. The injuries were sustained in eastern Iredell County, Campbell said.
Several additional witnesses were identified and interviewed. As a result of the investigation, Kayla Marie Horne, 20, of Kannapolis was charged with one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.
Horne was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center, where she was processed and given a $125,000 bond.
