Statesville City Council candidate Matthew Harwell announced that he plans to drop out of this fall’s election for two at-large seats due to personal reasons.

“I cannot give this campaign the proper attention it needs,” he explained, adding that his personal obligations have increased in recent weeks.

Harwell’s announcement came with endorsements in the at-large race.

“I have endorsed J.D. Williams and Julius Hoke,” Harwell said. “The ideas they have put forward closely align with my own. I feel they will move Statesville towards the city I envisioned when I announced my candidacy.”

Although Harwell is leaving the 2017 campaign trail, he plans to run for office again in the future.

“This will not be my last campaign,” Harwell promised, explaining he plans to run in 2019 for the Ward 1 seat held by Roy West.
